![]() Browsing through the shelves, I spotted A Novel Bookstore by Laurence Cossé, translated from French and published by the small company, Europa Editions. With a coincidence of chance and purpose, my most recent bookstore visit has left me in that very situation. So while the bookshop may present a magnificent threat to your pile of current reads, it is also a place of endless potential – where every trip brings the real possibility of stumbling upon your new favourite novel. Because, without the bookstore, discovery of hidden gems and accidental finds would be a near impossibility. Yet it certainly proves the principle upon which my A Book Buyer’s Guide post was based. This is, I think, both the peril and pleasure of the bookstore. One bookshop trip later, a number of ongoing reads have been cast aside, usurped by new books of demanding presence. ![]() ![]() ![]() After committing to working my way through my most recent book acquisitions before making further purchases, I caved. ![]()

The stories in The Arranged Marriage are narratives my mother has told me since I was a very little girl. ![]() I use narrow prose poems that resemble newspaper columns and that employ a detached voice, an attempt at reportage to speak about trauma and violence. The Arranged Marriage is a project book because its poems emerged out of a shared process and subject matter I spent two years interviewing my mother, focusing on three different stories: an exiled, Jewish childhood in Latin America an incident of extreme emotional and physical violence and an arranged marriage in the aftermath of that violence. What do you think makes your book (or any book) a “project book”? Synopsis: A book-length sequence of prose poems about a mother’s experiences with different kinds of forced intimacy and closeness. The result was a "clear and ordered "summa" of all the medical knowledge of Ibn Sīnā's time". He began writing the Canon in Gorganj, continued in Rey and completed it in Hamadan in 1025. Avicenna sought to fit these traditions into Aristotle's natural philosophy. The medical traditions of Galen and thereby Hippocrates, had dominated Islamic medicine from its beginnings. The English title The Canon of Medicine is a translation of the Arabic title القانون في الطب ( al-Qānūn fī aṭ-Ṭibb), with "canon" (translated in English to "law") used in the sense of "law". It is an important text in Unani medicine, a form of traditional medicine practiced in India. It set the standards for medicine in Medieval Europe and the Islamic world and was used as a standard medical textbook through the 18th century in Europe. The Canon of Medicine remained a medical authority for centuries. It presents an overview of the contemporary medical knowledge of the Islamic world, which had been influenced by earlier traditions including Greco-Roman medicine (particularly Galen), Persian medicine, Chinese medicine and Indian medicine. ![]() ![]() ![]() Perhaps one of the most famous and influential early books, that continued to influence later creations.
